Imagine you’re a SaaS company scaling rapidly. Last month, you signed up multiple clients who use your platform differently—some need basic subscriptions, while others demand complex, usage-based billing. As your customer base grows, so do the complexities of your billing. You need a system that can handle everything from tiered plans to real-time usage tracking without missing a beat. This is where choosing the right billing platform becomes crucial.

If you’re comparing Togai and Recurly, you’re looking for a solution that not only manages subscriptions efficiently but also adapts to diverse pricing models, integrates seamlessly, and scales as your business grows. Both platforms offer robust billing capabilities, but their approach to flexibility, implementation, and customization differs. In this comparison, we’ll break down key features, so you can decide which solution best aligns with your business needs.

Why Togai Stands Out Compared to Recurly for Usage-Based Billing

Togai is designed to handle complex pricing configurations, especially for businesses that require advanced usage-based, license-based, or tiered billing models. While Recurly primarily focuses on subscription billing, Togai offers over 100 different pricing configurations, enabling businesses to design custom billing strategies that fit their specific needs. This makes Togai an excellent choice for companies looking to scale with flexible billing options that extend beyond standard subscriptions.

Key Togai Features

  1. Real-Time Usage Tracking: Togai provides accurate, on-demand billing with real-time metering capabilities, ensuring customers are charged based on their actual usage. For example, a cloud service provider can use Togai to bill customers for storage and computing power as they consume it, instead of relying on flat monthly fees. This feature helps businesses manage dynamic pricing models effortlessly and ensures that billing is transparent and fair.
  2. Advanced Price Configurations: Togai supports a wide range of billing structures, including tiered pricing, volume-based discounts, hybrid models, and license-based billing. This flexibility allows companies to set up complex pricing strategies that match varying customer needs. For instance, SaaS companies can create tiered plans where users pay different rates based on the features they use or the amount of data they consume.
  3. Seamless Integration: Togai integrates seamlessly with existing systems, making it easier for companies to implement complex billing workflows without disrupting their current processes. This feature streamlines billing processes and enhances efficiency. Whether you are using CRM, ERP, or custom solutions, Togai’s ability to connect with your existing setup reduces implementation time and cost.
  4. Custom Workflows: Togai enables businesses to customize their billing workflows, automating everything from invoicing to subscription management. Companies can set up automated billing rules, discounts, and promotional offers based on customer behavior or usage patterns, making it easier to handle diverse billing requirements and scale as the business grows.
  5. Automated Invoicing and Payment Processing: By automating billing processes, Togai reduces manual errors and improves the accuracy of payment calculations. Automated invoicing ensures that businesses can scale without increasing their administrative workload. This ensures timely invoicing, leading to improved cash flow and customer satisfaction. Togai also integrates with multiple payment gateways, ensuring secure and smooth transactions.

Developer-Centric Solutions: Togai vs Recurly

When it comes to developer tools, Togai provides a flexible and customizable environment, enabling teams to set up and modify billing workflows based on unique business logic. Togai’s API is designed for easy integration, making it possible to create custom solutions for a variety of billing scenarios. This flexibility ensures that developers can implement billing rules and structures that align closely with business strategies.

For example, developers can use Togai’s API to set up custom billing scenarios that may involve billing based on feature usage, data consumption, or even user behavior. Companies looking to offer unique plans, like ‘pay-per-feature’ or ‘pay-as-you-go’ services, can implement these models easily without needing to overhaul their entire billing system.

Recurly also offers API integration, primarily tailored to standard subscription management. For businesses that require more diverse billing models, Togai’s developer-centric approach provides greater flexibility, supporting everything from usage-based metering to intricate license agreements. This allows businesses to be agile, quickly setting up new products or promotions without lengthy development cycles.

Billing Flexibility: Togai vs Recurly

Both Togai and Recurly offer robust billing capabilities, but their approaches differ. Recurly is optimized for subscription billing, making it a great choice for businesses that follow a standard recurring billing model. Togai, on the other hand, excels in providing flexible billing solutions for businesses that need to handle more complex pricing structures.

What Togai Offers?

Tiered Pricing: Charge customers based on usage tiers, allowing businesses to offer more value to high-usage clients. For example, a software company could set up tiers where basic users pay a lower rate, while more advanced users can access premium features by paying higher rates. This model works well for businesses that want to encourage users to upgrade as they grow.

Volume-Based Pricing: Provide discounts as customers increase their usage, rewarding loyalty and high-volume purchases. SaaS companies that cater to enterprises often use volume-based discounts to provide cost benefits to businesses that use their services on a larger scale, encouraging more consistent usage.

Hybrid and License-Based Pricing: Combine multiple pricing models or set up license-based billing, making it easier to cater to unique business requirements. For instance, a company that offers both software licenses and cloud services can bill clients for the software based on licenses and charge for cloud services on a usage basis, all within the same billing platform.

Real-Time Data and Insights: Togai’s platform allows businesses to access real-time usage data and insights, helping them make informed decisions about their pricing strategies. This ensures that companies can adjust their billing models quickly if they notice patterns, such as seasonal demand spikes or increased usage of particular features.

What do you dislike about Recurly?
- Customer service - we have numerous frustrations with Recurly and, whenever we raise them with the team, our comments seem to fall on deaf ears. In one specific example, we asked for a simple copy change to the way credits are described on invoices because it confuses our customers and creates a lot of work for our customer service team. But, all we were told was "I have submitted your feedback to our product team but do not have any kind of timetable of when or if this may be considered". So, they're not saying they disagree with the copy change, they're just saying it may or may not be considered. And there is no timetable for when that may or may not happen. Disappointing to say the least.
- Reports - reports are not great (we've provided a lot of feedback on this over the years). So, we have to invest in Chart Mogul to provide decent metrics (at quite a high cost). - Invoices are not clear enough for our customers
